We’re looking for individuals to join the Habitat Ireland Board of Trustees, read about current Trustee Graeme McCammon's experience below.

How did you first get involved with Habitat?

I was a member of the Coalition of Aid Development Agencies of Northern Ireland (CADA) and heard about Habitat's excellent work. As a former public servant, I also worked with the All-Party Group for International Development (APGID) at Stormont and was struck by how highly MLAs rated Habitat for Humanity's mission.

Why did you join the Board of Trustees?

I wanted to use my own personal experience as a former public servant with over 30 years of international development experience, to support the strategic development and expansion of Habitat's work both across the island of Ireland and internationally.

What is your favourite memory from your time on the Board?

Being able to host a wide variety of regional, national and international guests to Habitat Restores. I think it is fair to say that our guests have been genuinely blown away by the growth and expansion of our operations, and always taken by surprise by our ambitious plans for growth.

What does Habitat's mission mean to you?

Habitat's mission resonates on many different levels to me.

For Homeowners it means dignity and stability. For the families who partner with Habitat, the mission isn't just about a roof; it’s about fostering a profound sense of ownership and pride.

For Volunteers it is active citizenship - for those who turn up with a hammer or a paintbrush, our mission offers a tangible way to engage with their community. Habitat Restores are places where people from differently socio-economic backgrounds work side-by-side towards a common goal.

For the Community, Habitat adds to societal cohesion. Habitat doesn't just build isolated houses; it builds neighbourhoods, supporting people and reducing the strain on social service provision.

What would you say to someone considering applying to be a Trustee?

It is an exciting time to join Habitat Ireland as we expand and strengthen across the whole of the island. Joining Habitat's Board offers so many benefits: High-Level Networking - rubbing shoulders with other civic-minded leaders. Governance: Developing your own experience in non-profit oversight and strategic planning. Legacy: Creating a permanent, physical mark on the island of Ireland by supporting an internationally recognised charity.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

Gandhi: 'The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others'
