25 year old Rhoda Kameta lives with her nieces and nephew in her Habitat home in Malawi. Rhoda has cared for 9 year old Janet, 7 year old Victor and 2 year old Christina since her sister died of HIV and AIDS related sickness. Rhoda earns very little income doing odd jobs around the village, such as cultivating her neighbours land for $2. The family was living in an unsafe house made of mud brick, with a leaky thatch roof and no windows. The two rooms provided barely enough room for the family to sleep and the door did not lock. Rhoda didn’t worry around thieves because she has nothing of value to steal however she was concerned about the safety of her family.
Rhoda and her family became Habitat homeowners through Habitat Malawi’s Orphans and Vulnerable Groups programme. Rhoda can now sleep easy as their new Habitat home has a secure door and sturdy windows to protect the children. The future now looks a lot brighter for the children; a secure roof prevents Janet’s schoolbooks from getting wet, which has helped her to concentrate on her studies. The children’s health has also improved since they no longer sleep on a wet dirt floor.
