Big Build 2019 is underway. In 1 week, the team will build 10 homes beside local families, supporting Orphaned and Vulnerable children in the community. This is Jelina, one of the beneficiaries, read her story below.

Jelina is a widow and mother to her five young children.

The family currently reside in a house that is small and dilapidated. The house leaks heavily during rainy season which makes life tough for the family. They are forced to stand up during the storms & it is hard for the children to study and keep their books dry. The damp living conditions & poor sanitation mean that the whole household regularly suffers from sickness.

Jelina's family are forced to use a dilapidated, un-ventilated pit latrine. It poses so many risks to the safety of the children, but it is all they have.

The common diseases in the household range from Malaria, diarrhea, colds, flues, and persistent coughs particularly for the children in the house. The family is dependent on piece works and odd jobs as a means of survival.

As part of Big Build 2019, Serena will work alongside volunteers from across Ireland to build a safe & secure place, that she can call home.

This World Habitat Day, raise your voice for families like Serena's, who are still fighting for their right to safe shelter.
