Life journeys of women all around the world start at home. Some are more challenging than others. But all the women share an unbreakable will to live in decent conditions. Read Phann's story below.

A home that will change everything

In Cambodia, almost seventy-five percent of the population still live on less than $3 a day.

Phann is one of those who struggles to provide for herself and her family. Stuck in the cycle of poverty, Phann was unable to sleep in her home without getting rained on. Because of this she had little energy and was prone to illness, meaning she could not always find work. This affected her income, meaning she couldn’t always buy food to feed her grandchildren.

Home is the start of it, for all of us, but for Phann her new home which she built alongside Habitat volunteers, meant that she was able to get a good night’s sleep. Her home was secure, so the rains no longer worry her. She is now healthier, happier and hopeful for the future that her new home provided her.

This story was contributed by Ellen McCullagh, who was one of the volunteers who helped Phann to build her home in 2017. Ellen’s submission was chosen out of all the other contributions to be included in this exhibition. Ellen said “This gentle and kind woman really touched my heart and I hope she is doing well in her new home.”
